Daylight Saving weekend is here!

Most of us will be setting our clocks ahead by one hour Saturday night, as we spring ahead to Daylight Saving Time from Standard Time.

Saskatchewan, of course, is the major exception, remaining on Standard Time year round.

It’s become somewhat of a tradition on time change weekends to check the smoke detectors in your home.

The Calgary Fire Department’s Stephen Nicoll has a warning for people, who hope to save a few dollars over the course of the year by using rechargeable batteries.

“People get reliant on rechargeable batteries,” Nicoll tells 660News. “In this case you want that warning beep to go off with your smoke detector when your battery is getting low, and that doesn’t always happen with rechargeable batteries.”

In some cases, Nicoll recommends replacing your entire smoke detector unit, especially if it’s more than 10 years old.

“That’s the recommendation from most manufacturer is at least every ten years,” adds Nicoll. “Sooner is obviously better.  People also don’t think that doesn’t apply to their hard-wired smoke detectors that comes with their houses when they buy them, and it certainly does.”

Nicoll advises that monthly testing of your smoke detectors is preferable to semi-annual testing, and to use the test button — instead of actual smoke — when doing the testing.
