60-thousand Canadian students fast to raise money

Over 100 groups in Calgary are giving up food for 30 hours.

They’re among some 60-thousand students across the country who are participating in World Vision’s 30-Hour famine.

T.J. Grant with World Vision tells 660News the students get the chance to get a better understanding of child poverty.

“What’s great about this 30 hour famine is not only does it give a way for young people here to respond and to help, but by going hungry it really gives them the opportunity to feel and experience what it’s like–even just for 30 hours– to walk in the shoes of the people that they’re helping,” he says.

They’re raising money to fight child poverty across the globe and are expected to raise $4.6-million to help children in countries like Haiti, El Salvador and the Philippines.

People from 22 other countries are also participating in the event, which ends Saturday night.
