McIver’s backers solicit support for mayoral bid

Two high profile Calgarians want to see Alderman Ric McIver become our next mayor.

He’s not yet officially running for the city’s top job but his backers are trying to drum up funding for a campaign.

A mass e-mail petition is making the rounds looking for support for the long-time alderman.

It was put out by former Tory M-L-A Mark Hlady and U of C political science professor Tom Flanagan, who was once a senior adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

McIver has been thinking about the big seat for a while and he tells 660News the petition is a move to measure his support before he can declare his intentions.

“It’s no secret that I’m considering my options in the election for this year and I’m measuring support both people-wise and money-wise, until I make my intentions clear,” he says.

He says he will announce his plans in the ‘near future.’

As for the speculation swirling around who will throw their hats in the ring, McIver says, that’s part of the fun.

“The speculation on who will run for what, and when, is one of the fun things about politics and we can all enjoy it.”

Alderman Bob Hawkesworth is also measuring what his support would be if he were to run.

Other possible candidates include businessman Alnoor Kassam and Alderman Joe Connelly.

Mayor Bronconnier spent $800,000 in his bid to win the mayor’s seat back in 2001.
