Local social worker helping women in need this holiday season

A Calgary social worker is helping local women in need this winter by giving them something any woman can use.

The idea behind the 100 Purses campaign is to fill donated purses with basic items that homeless and vulnerable women may not have access to, including toiletries, mittens, and scarves.

Talley Roe saw the idea online, and decided to get it started here.

“I thought, if I could (fill) one purse, I’m sure I could find enough people to (fill) 100 purses,” Roe said.

She was right. So far, she has received enough donations for 300 purses, and she’s hoping for more.

Roe told 660 NEWS, her experience working with women in the last 10 years inspired her to work on this cause for the holiday season.

“I remember talking to them about Christmas and how many wouldn’t receive anything,” Roe said. “The things that they would request were so modest, like toiletries and hygeine products and basic supplies that I thought, this is something that’s actually achievable, to make these Christmas purses for other people.”

Roe will be filling the purses on December 12th, and will deliver them to the Mustard Seed and the Drop In Centre on December 21st for distribution.
