Five snowmobilers dead following avalanche near McBride

PRINCE GEORGE (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia’s Coroner’s Service says five people have died in an avalanche near the community of McBride.

Barb McLintock of the Coroners Service says there was a very large avalanche Friday afternoon in an area where a group of people were snowmobiling.

She says two coroners have been dispatched from Prince George and RCMP are investigating.

Avalanche Canada says the avalanche appears to be human triggered but did not elaborate.

He says rain and snow over the last few days followed by clearing and cooling on Friday may have produced stresses in the snowpack.

The organization is warning people to be cautious this weekend.

McBride is about 210 kilometres southeast of Prince George.
