Calgary Stampede Parade 2012

The 100th edition of what’s billed as the greatest outdoor show on Earth is underway in Calgary.
    
Hundreds of thousands of people turned out Friday morning in the downtown to watch a four-kilometre-long parade kick off the annual Stampede.
    
This year’s parade marshal is country singer Ian Tyson.

Also riding in the parade, Premier Alison Redford and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi who says he has been on a horse before.

“I’m from Calgary!  Of course I have, but I have to warn everybody, that spending three hours on hot asphalt with 500,000 people around you, it ain’t your typical trail ride,” said the mayor.
   
And the parade winners are:

– Best Prelude: Chinook Country Line Dancers
– Best Overall: Ismaili Muslim Community
– Most Creative: Royal Tyrell Museum
– Best Western Theme: Ismaili Muslim Community
– Best Corporate: Cenovus Energy
– Best Business or Non-Profit: Royal Tyrell Museum
– Best Cultural: Best of Mexico – Canada Mexico Chamber of Business
– Best Municipal: Town of High River
– Best Horse Entry: Gull Lake Farms

“Thank you to all the participants of the Centennial Parade and congratulations to the award winners – we couldn’t have done it without you!” says Susanne Huggard, chair, Parade committee. “All of the entries reminded us of why We’re Greatest Together and made this Parade one in which we will all remember for a lifetime,” she adds.

The Stampede — which attracts more than a million people annually — runs until July 15th.
