An Alberta oil company has shut down operations in one area of the province because of the Fort McMurray fires.
In a statement released on Thursday, Athabasca Oil said that the Hangingstone project would be shut down due to the wildfire that has destroyed most of Fort McMurray.
The company cited the fast-growing fires, which were only 5 kilometres away from the site at the time, as the reason behind the closure.
All employees were evacuated by Thursday evening.
The release went on to say that the company’s first priority is the safety of its employees and contractors, and that the site will be reopened once it is deemed safe to do so.
