AUMA calls for financial overhaul of seniors’ homes

Municipalities are pushing for an overhaul of the rules governing seniors’ lodges in Alberta.
The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association will debate the issue at a convention in Edmonton later this month.
The organization plans to write a resolution urging the province to assume equal responsibility for deficits incurred by the lodges.
AUMA president Linda Sloan tells The Calgary Herald increasing costs are being passed off to local governments; and those costs are only going to rise as the population ages.
It is expected one in four Canadians will be over the age of 65 in 20 years, compared to the current statistic of one in seven.
