The city’s preview of Canada Day celebrations!

Got your red and white handy?

The city is getting ready for Canada Day celebrations that will take over Calgary’s core on Friday.

The Harmony Guzheng Orchestra will be one of several buskers in 12 locations throughout downtown.

Teresa Byrne Superintendent with arts and culture festivals and events says it all starts at Fort Calgary.

“Comes through East Village stops at the National Music Centre continues on down the river walk through China Town, Eau Claire Market onto Prince’s Island and it also heads down to Stephen Avenue and into Olympic Plaza” Byrne said.

He adds there will be lots of of organizations taking part.

“Our Canadian Military are coming and joining and we’re also at Olympic plaza it’s the 100th year of women’s suffrage so the Famous 5 Foundation is coming out to participate in what’s going to be a great market space with actives and dance on the plaza.” Byrne said.

You can also be a part of a very patriotic selfie as Calgary tries to snatch back the living flag title from Winnipeg.

“Given that Calgarians have a great fighting spirit and our flag was designed by a Calgarian we’re hoping to get as many people out dressed in their red or their white at Fort Calgary at noon to help create our nation’s largest living flag and get back that title.”

Byrne says hopefully this year’s celebrations will be as popular as previous years.

“The last couple of years we’ve been able to bring in about 250,000 people throughout the day so we’re anticipating another large crowd this year.”

There will of course be a spectacular fireworks display set off the Centre Street Bridge at 11’o clock to wrap up July 1st.

Bryne says it’s a bit of a double celebration as the Centre Street Bridge is celebrating its 100th birthday.
