Calgary council will be discussing a motion of installing gender-neutral washrooms at city facilities.
Faculty Director of Sexual Minority Studies and Services at the University of Alberta, Dr. Kristopher Wells, says this is a great step for Calgary.
“It’s certainly amongst the leading municipalities in Canada. I know Vancouver has certainly done a tremendous amount of work in its city facilities and in particular for its recreation, leisure centres,” said Wells.
He believes this is the start of a trend in our country as the City of Edmonton is also looking at signage to create gender inclusive washrooms.
In Edmonton, council voted earlier this year to make all bathrooms LGBQT-inclusive at municipally-run facilities.
Signs on family washrooms were to be replaced with ones that read ‘all gender’.
