Family hospitalized after carbon monoxide exposure

A Calgary family of five, who had just returned from vacation, were taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

The family had just gotten home on Thursday from a holiday, when one of them started to feel dizzy and nauseous.

That person woke up the rest of the family members, who were all experiencing similar symptoms. They left the house and dialed 9-1-1.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Premiere Way S.W. around 6:45 a.m.

Three adults and two teenagers were then taken to Rockyview General Hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

Fire fighters found carbon monoxide readings as high as 600 parts per million in the basement.

According to ATCO, the problem was caused by the drainage system on the boiler, likely due to the cold weather.

The Calgary Fire Department is calling the case another reminder of the importance of having a working carbon monoxide detector on every level of a home.

There were no working detectors in the home at the time of the incident.
