A 20-year-old Calgary man with previous weapons and drug charges is now facing two counts of first-degree murder in a brazen shooting at a Superstore parking lot.
Christian Ouellette is accused of the deaths of 26-year-old Anees Amr and 23-year-old Colin Reitberger, gunned down in the McKenzie Towne lot while it was still open on May 21 just before 8 p.m.
The sun was still out during the crime, with shoppers going about their day.
Insp. Don Coleman said investigators put in a tremendous amount of work to get an arrest this quickly.
“Some files there’s obstacles around technology and different things, this is a result of, to use the term, good old-fashioned police work and a lot of it,” he said.
Ouellette was charged last summer with weapons and drug charges, in an investigation that also led to a trafficking charge against his father – a suspended lawyer – of the same name.
As for this crime, Coleman said the suspect knew the victims through criminal networks.
“The investigation that was conducted afforded evidence of obviously premeditation and a degree of planning that went into the event,” he said.
But police are also searching for a William Kincade-Miller, who is believed to have more information and his whereabouts are unknown.
“He could potentially be anywhere, including Calgary,” Coleman said. “We had some information that he’s potentially in Ontario and making his way to New Brunswick so those areas have been notified.”
It’s suspected Ouellette drove to the parking lot by himself, committed the murders and then drove off to an area in the northeast where he abandoned his vehicle, which has been recovered.
Police then believe he was picked up in a red Dodge Durango SLT, likely a 2004 to 2006 model with a sunroof and then dropped off at a gas station at 70 Freeport Blvd. N.E.
Investigators are trying to find that car and its owner.
“Maybe he knew Mr. Ouellette, maybe he didn’t, maybe he just picked him up, we don’t know what the circumstances are, so that’s what we’re trying to figure out,” he said.
