Calgary opens season with a OT setback

Matt Beers scored 4:17 into overtime to push the Vancouver Warriors past the Calgary Roughnecks 14-13 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Calgary, who out shot the visitors 56-46, held a 12-8 advantage heading into the fourth-quarter. The Warriors were able to string together five unanswered goals tying it up with just 0:22 left in the game.

Logan Schuss (3g, 6a) led Vancouver with nine points while James Rahe (2g, 3a) was next with five. Goaltender Aaron Bold stood tall between the pipes for the visitors stopping 43 shots in a span of 64:17 minutes.

Dane Dobbie, who received the start for Calgary, matched Schuss’ nine point performance with five goals and four assists. Tyler Pace (2g, 4a) was another top performer for the home team with six points followed by Calgary product Dan Taylor (1g, 4a) who had five. In his first NLL appearance, Chris Boushy tallied two points with a goal and an assist.

Calgary went 4-7 on the power play while Vancouver went 2-3.

The Roughnecks now head to Vancouver on Dec. 21 to face-off in their new barn, Rogers Arena, for an 8:00 p.m. start.

Calgary’s next home game, and their only Friday night match up this season, is on Dec. 28. Game time is 7:00 p.m. MST.
