Anti-mask rally at Chinook Centre a ‘non-event’: CPS

CALGARY (CityNews) — Calgary police and mall security were ready for a group of mask-less shoppers Saturday, who were planning a protest to challenge the city’s face-covering bylaw.

Police say that they were expecting to mobilize if the protest involved more than a dozen people, but say they did not receive the call.

The group, Freedom Unity Alliance, planned the protest to begin at 1 p.m. at Chinook Centre.

The group publicly posted that their goal was to “encourage and empower other onlookers” to take off their masks.

In a statement to CityNews, Chinook Centre’s parent company Cadillac Fairview said they were aware of the event and were working with Calgary police to ensure a safe shopping environment.

The protest comes one day after Calgary was added to the province’s COVID-19 watch list.
