Local burger joint warning about scam targetting restaurants

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A well-known burger joint in the southeast is sounding the alarm over a potential scam targetting Calgary businesses,

Management at N9NA on 17 Ave. SE said the restaurant almost fell victim to a scam after receiving emails asking for $1,500 in food for frontline workers.

Karen Lloyd, the general manager of the restaurant said the email was at first enticing as the business already gives discounts to these workers.

“For us, we give 25 per cent off to any frontline workers,” said general manager Karen Lloyd. “The police come in often and order lunch.”

However, Lloyd started to see some red flags from similar emails, all coming from a United States address.

“A few hours later, I got another email stating the exact same thing but (with) 150 different items. What is going on here?”

Lloyd believes the scammers were trying to take advantage of their goodwill and exploit her business.

She’s now sharing her story in the hopes other restaurant owners don’t fall victim.

“They (scammers) were asking us about our server systems. An order like that can devastate a company.”

Lloyd has since put the word out on social media and contacted police about the emails.
