Alberta COVID-19 case count surges as active cases surpass 8,000

CALGARY — For the first time in several months, Alberta reported more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
The 1,076 new cases of the virus come after 11,747 tests were completed — for a positivity rate of around 9.2 per cent.
Wednesday’s case count is the highest daily case count since May 15.

Active cases in the province now sit at 8,496 — a 565 case increase from Tuesday’s update.
One additional death was reported on Wednesday.
There are now 284 people in hospital with COVID-19, a 26 person rise from the day prior, with 59 people in the ICU.
Of those admitted to the ICU, 55 are unvaccinated.
As a whole, 221 of the 284 people in hospital have yet to receive a shot.

When it comes to active cases in Alberta, Calgary leads the way with 1,903 active infections, while Edmonton now has 1,891 active cases.
Over the last day, 7,470 vaccine doses were administered, 2,947 of which were first-dose appointments.
Of the eligible population in the province, 77.5 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 69 per cent are fully vaccinated.
