A situation in Calgary that could have escalated is a reminder for people as to why you aren’t supposed to throw your batteries in the trash.
The fire department says it was called to a city recycling facility 46 Street near 102 Avenue SE on Wednesday. Crews quickly entered the building to find workers at the recycling facility were already trying to put the fire out
The fire was knocked down less than 15 minutes after first responders arrived.
Crews determined that the fire started because of a lithium battery, which was crushed in a hopper.
Nobody was hurt, but the city is now reminding everyone that batteries need to be separated and taken to specific recycling locations, which can be found here.
“If they end up in any of the bins (blue, green or black), the batteries can get crushed by equipment leading to fires at the recycling facility, composting facility and landfill sites,” a release reads.
