One driver said it led to a multi-car pileup, with “dozens of dozens” of vehicles on the road.
“There’s probably about a mile of vehicles in and out of the ditch. Bus, a couple of big semi’s, cars, trucks,” said one driver. “It’s very, very long, and it would be best to avoid travel.”
RCMP say that around 25-30 vehicles may have been involved.
It’s unclear what led to the crash, but EMS say they transported a woman in her 80s to hospital in serious condition.
Alberta 511 says that emergency crews are on the scene and to expect major delays.
It also recommends drivers take Highway 2A as an alternate route.
Another crash in Calgary snarled traffic on Stoney Trail between Mcknight Boulevard and 16 Avenue NE, which has reopened.
