Calgary drops plans to annex Foothills County lands

By Alejandro Melgar and Mike Gazzola

Calgary no longer plans to annex Foothills County lands into the city.

The city says the decision comes after the first phase of public consultation and “technical analysis” of the annexation area was completed in April.

It states it has adequate land supply within its boundaries for the next 35-49 years based on current growth rates.

The area being considered includes 415 acres of land on the west side of Calgary’s border with Foothills County.

“We have decided that now is not the appropriate time to proceed with the annexation of these lands from Foothills County,” said Ward 12 Coun. and Annexation Negotiation Committee (ANC) co-chair Evan Spencer in a news release.

“However, the city will continue to monitor its available land supply and will consider its need to pursue a more comprehensive annexation at a future date. We look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship with our neighbours in Foothills County,”

Foothills County Coun. and ANC co-chair Don Waldorf says the county agrees with the city’s decision.

“We value our strong relationship with Calgary and at such time as the city decides that they would like to undertake a more comprehensive annexation, we will be prepared to come to the table once again, ready to negotiate the terms of an annexation agreement,” Waldorf’s statement reads.

Foothills County was earlier identified as a long-term “growth area” for Calgary through the city’s 2017 Foothills County development plan. This says it could be incorporated into the city.
