Crews respond to fire at business on Macleod Trail

Crews were on scene at a fire at a Bulk Barn on Macleod Trail Thursday morning.
Callers to the CityNews660 traffic centre reported traffic in the right hand land of northbound Macleod Trail was blocked just before 7 a.m.
Calgary Fire spokesperson Carole Henke told CityNews firefighters responded to the 9200 block of Macleod Trail SE around 6:20 a.m. after receiving reports of thick, dark smoke coming for a business.
“When our fire crews arrived, there was definitely a working fire inside the business at the far west end of the strip mall,” she explained. “Our fire crews worked very hard to get the fire under control. It appears to have started in the interior and worked its way up into the roof and the parapet.”
Henke adds the fire is now under control and crews continue to look for hotspots.
No injuries have been reported.
While the business where the fire started has suffered damage, Henke says neighbouring businesses have been impacted only by smoke.
Amidst a city-wide water crisis sparked by a broken feeder main pipe two weeks ago, Henke says crews were mindful of their water use.
“Our fire crews have worked very hard at using the least amount of water but the water necessary to extinguish the fire,” she said, adding there are contingency plans in place should supply from fire hydrants be an issue.
“We are prepared for any type of situation when we need to be bringing in extra water should the hydrants not provide the amount of pressure that we need,” Henke added.
Fire incident commanders at the scene estimate the water used at this fire to be about 20,000 litres.
“A charged hose line is a literal lifeline for our firefighters who are inside a burning building searching for occupants and doing fire suppression,” said Acting Fire Chief Debora Bergeson. “The CFD is very grateful for all of the water conservation Calgarians have done so that we have a safe and continuous water supply for exactly these types of emergencies.
“Public and firefighter safety is paramount.”
