A man is dead after being struck by a pickup truck in northeast Calgary on Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 52 Street and 26 Avenue NE around 10:40 a.m. Thursday for reports of a serious crash.

Calgary police say a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was heading southbound on 52 Street and stopped at a red light at 26 Avenue. At the same time, a man in his 60s was crossing 52 Street in a crosswalk.

When the light turned green, the Silverado drove through the intersection and struck the man who was still in the crosswalk, according to police.

The pedestrian was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Silverado, a man in his 20s, stayed at the scene and was not hurt.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and police do not think speed or impairment played a role.

Anyone who may have dashcam or security footage of the area is being urged to contact police at 403-266-1234, or CrimeStoppers anonymously.

Police closed 52 Street from 32 Avenue to 26 Avenue NE for the investigation. The roads reopened shortly after 3 p.m.
