Severe thunderstorm watch issued for central, northern Alberta

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for central and northern Alberta, covering multiple cities and towns, on Thursday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) watch stretches from Airdrie to Edmonton, and further north to Athabasca.

The thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, and they may become severe with hail, strong wind gusts, and downpours.

Officials say any thunderstorms that do develop will move east or southwest through the evening and overnight hours.

The ECCC also warns that thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

While Calgary just misses the watch, meteorologists say there is a 30 per cent chance of showers in the city, and a risk of a thunderstorm.

Friday also has a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the ECCC says strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles, and large hail can cause significant damage and injury.

It issues thunderstorm watches when conditions for developing thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind, or rain are favourable.
