‘Pause for Pets’: Meet Topaz, the canine gem waiting for someone to put a leash on it

In 660 NewsRadio’s weekly Pause for Pets, take a moment to meet Topaz, the latest pet at the Calgary Animal Services looking for a home.
Here are details of her chat with Kristina Ince, the centre’s animal behaviour coordinator.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi! I’m Topaz, an 18-month-old mixed breed gal (maybe part cattle dog, maybe part pitty, all-around good dog). I’m known for my tall ears (they pop up like radar when I’m excited!) and my full-body wiggles when I meet someone new.
I do tend to burst with energy at first-there might even be an excited yip! But once I’ve said my enthusiastic hello, I settle down and enjoy the moment.
How long have you been with the City?

I’ve been at Calgary Animal Services for about five months now, since April. And I am no slacker. Whether it’s greeting visitors, splashing in the pool, or supervising playtime, I like to contribute and take work here very seriously.
What are your typical daily tasks?

I start my shift bright and early with some yard patrols: Gotta keep things safe and sniffed! Then I head off for a nice walk with a volunteer.
I check in on the pool regularly (quality control, obviously), play with my dog friends, and do some enrichment activities with staff. I also take on the role of volunteer fitness coach–keeping them moving on our walks, and occasionally serve as doorbell backup.
I don’t overdo it, but I like to keep people informed when someone’s arriving.
What are your interests and hobbies?

I love the water on hot days, you’ll find me wading in the pool, staying cool and stylish. Playtime with my friends is always on the agenda.
I enjoy rolling around in the grass, collecting tasty treats, and going for sniffy, enriching walks with my human friends. I’m curious and alert when we’re out and about, especially if I see another dog, but I’m learning to manage my excitement with some guidance.
And after all the fun, I’m more than happy to chill out and relax. Couch time sounds great to me!
What are you looking for in a home?

I’m looking for a home that gets me a place where my energy and enthusiasm are appreciated, and where I can be both playful and peaceful.
I’d love an active family or individual who enjoys walks, playtime, and has a little patience to help me continue building confidence with new people. A doggy sibling could be great, and treats should definitely be stocked.
