Catriona Le May Doan bids farewell after 9 years as Sport Calgary CEO and president

A big leadership change is coming to Sport Calgary.

Canadian Olympian and speedskating superstar Catriona Le May Doan has bid farewell to Sport Calgary after serving nine years as president and CEO.

The organization’s board of directors say they are grateful for Le May Doan’s “leadership, vision, and impact during her tenure,” announcing her departure via press release on Friday.

“Since joining Sport Calgary in 2016, Catriona has elevated our city’s sport ecosystem to a national standard of excellence,” said board chair Jeff Booke. “On behalf of the Board and our entire sport community, I want to thank her for advancing access, performance, and partnership in sport across Calgary.”

Sport Calgary says her contributions include implementing the Civid Sport for Life policy, which broke down barriers to sport participation and expanded sport discovery opportunities for equity deserving populations.

She also advocated for the continued implementation of safe and inclusive sport via mandatory safe sport standards and helped create the Declaration of Inclusion in 2019.

“I am proud of the work our team has done over the last decade to break down barriers of participation,” said Le May Doan.

“Sport Calgary has ensured all Calgarians have the opportunity to play, which has resulted in a healthier and more active community. In making significant progress towards our goals in this work, I believe our organization is now well-positioned for the next chapter.”

The board says they are in the midst of recruiting for a new president and CEO, and the transition is part of a “well-planned succession process.” They are aiming for a “seamless transition” that will continue Sport Calgary’s programs, along with its partners — including the City of Calgary — and community stakeholders.

Booke says it will build on the foundations Le May Doan established.

“Sport Calgary’s next phase will carry forward her emphasis on impact, innovation, and inclusion,” he said.
