Hundreds forced from their homes after a massive fire in Edmonton

A massive inferno in southwest Edmonton.

A condo construction site went up in flames early Sunday morning. Within one hour of arrival crews upgraded the call to a 3 alarm blaze. Around 85 firefighters were called to the scene.

Edmonton Fire spokesperson Michael Tucker tells 660News the construction site was fully engulfed when they arrived.

“The vinyl siding on the sides of houses melted off because the heat was so intense. So we had to evacuate about 200 people and they were ushered onto transit buses and later we opened a nearby elementary school to accommodate them,” says Tucker.

Tucker says vehicles parked nearby to burst into flames because of the heat.

Officials also concerned with things like industrial propane tanks that could explode.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Officials are investigating to find a cause.
