Canadian Cattlemen wait for decision on COOL law

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association is looking forward to the summer of 2011.
Thats’ when they expect a ruling from the world trade organization on whether the united states country of origin labelling or cool violates wto agreements.
The Cattlemen’s Association and the Canadian Government took part in hearings in Geneva at the beginning of December to challenge the U.S. law.
CCA President Travis Toews tells 660News the U.S. is our most important trading partner for canadian beef, but there have been problems.
“We’ve had good beef trade with the U.S. this last year, but after the country of origin labeling legislation implemented in the fall of 2008, we really saw a decline in cattle exports, feeder cattle and fed cattle exports into the U.S.” said Toews.
Toews says its very difficult to predict how the panel will rule in this case since its very complex and will just have to take a wait and see approach.
