RCMP shoot man after attempted needle attack

One man is in hospital after he was shot following his attempt to stab an RCMP officer with a hypodermic needle.

Police say a member of the force attempted to pull over a grey SUV shortly before noon Friday on Highway 1 near Banff, but the driver refused to stop and instead led officers on a slow speed chase.

When police finally managed to get the suspect to pull over, the driver attempted to stab an officer with a needle and that’s when the RCMP member fired his weapon.

Sergeant Patrick Webb with the RCMP says the chase didn’t end there. After being shot, the suspect fled the scene again until officers were finally able to box in the SUV near Canmore.

When the suspect once again tried to use the needle as a weapon, officers used a Taser on him and were able take the man into custody.

The driver is now in hospital with non life-threatening injuries and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating.
