Crime on the move?

New crime statistics have some wondering if Calgary police are winning the war against criminals or if they are just moving to other parts of the city.

When it comes to crime reports the Beltline is tops.

Between December 2008 and this past November, police received more than 1300 reports of crime from the Beltline, those include everything from assaults and robberies to break-ins and vehicle thefts.

Alderman Andre Chabot and Ray Jones tell the Calgary Sun they believe the crackdown on crime downtown has simply pushed criminal activity into other inner city communities.

Police Chief Rick Hanson tells 660News, the clean up the core campaign which did see 60 more officers added to the beat downtown, was not done at the expense of other parts of the city. He says any reduction in crime in any part of the city benefits all.

Hanson says the force is constantly monitoring what’s happening throughout the city and will respond to any new trends.

The top five crime areas in the city are as follows, the Beltline, Downtown, Forest Lawn, Pineridge and Falconridge.
