Olympic Flame returns to Calgary

For the first time in 22 years, the Olympic Flame returns to Calgary.

The Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay rolls into Calgary later today.

Drivers are being told to expect traffic delays, as the flame moves through the city headed to Olympic Plaza downtown for a party starting at 5:00 p.m.

Before the Vancouver torch relay, Calgary held the record for the longest winter Olympic torch relay.

That one lasted 88 days and covered 18 thousand kilometres.

Vancouver’s relay covers 45 thousand kilometres and is taking 100 days to complete.

The man who headed up Calgary’s torch relay was former crazy canuck skier, Jungle Jim Hunter.

Hunter tells 660News, he has a room full of memories from 1988, all contained on audio cassettes, which he recorded after Former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed gave him a tape recorder.

Hunter’s only complaint about the Vancouver Torch relay is he believes most or all of the participants were hand picked by corporate sponsors.

He says back in 1988 they held a lottery draw, more than 11 million people applied for the 10 thousand spots.
