Accuracy of food labelling questioned

A recent study has found a number of candy and baked good products don’t live up to the billing contained on their nutritional labels.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reports about 60 per cent of the products it tested were not as “sugar free,” “low in fat” or “100 per cent whole wheat” as they stated.

Health and consumer advocacy groups are speaking out.

Bruce Cran with the Consumers Association of Canada tells 660News it appears Canadians are being sold a false bill of goods.

He says after years of people being told to read and trust their food labels, it now turns out they are not reliable.

Cran says he wants more information and the matter could be brought before the Competition Bureau of Canada, which deals with issues like false advertising.

On a positive note, the study found that quite often the total calorie number on a food label was overstated.
