Cochrane Man Completes 250 Marathons for 2010

Martin Parnell has finished his New Year’s resolution, just in time to make a new one.

The 55 year old grandfather of two finished his 250th marathon for 2010 earlier today, helping to raise close to $200,000 for “Right to Play,” an international children’s group that provides sports and music to children in developing parts of the world.

“It’s a top charity, they help kids with music, sports and physical activity,” he says. “They develop programs for these kids all over the world including Canada.”

With completing his final race, he tells 660News it’s been one marathon of a year.

“I suffered in the winter, at the start I had injuries, I was out for two and a half weeks and was really looking forward to the summer,” he says. “Then summer was rubbish, it was wet and cold and I didn’t enjoy it at all.”

It wasn’t until September when things turned around, the weather improved and he says he really started to get energized.

He says there’s not much that’s going to be able to top this experience, but for now he’s looking forward to a break.

“I’m going to go back to work, but I am doing an Ultra Marathon in South Africa in May,” Parnell says. “That will give me a chance to visit some of the Right to Play schools which will be brilliant!”

And as far as his New Year’s resolution tonight, Parnell tells us that’s simple…

“Not to run 250 marathons in 2011!”
