AFL advises government

The President of the Alberta Federation of Labour says the Stelmach government better not be tabling an austerity budget later this week.
Gil McGowan tells 660News the province is awash with cash and now is not the time to reduce spending or cut back programs.
McGowan says Alberta is still recovering from the severe cuts that former Premier Ralph Klein brought in back in the 1990’s.
He also believes the so-called $5 billion deficit that is apparently on the books will magically disappear later this year.
The AFL says the Alberta government doesn’t have a spending problem, but a revenue problem.
According to figures released by the union, the province has failed to properly collect cash from oil and gas companies, resulting in a shortfall of at least $37 billion in the past decade alone.
