Changes on the way for the Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede is going through with changes to the chuckwagon races in time for this year’s event.
Doug Fraser with the Stampede tells 660News, not only will horses be examined by veterinarians before and after every race, but the number of outriders will also change.
“We’re going to align ourselves with both professional chuckwagon associations and reduce the number of outriders from four to two.”
Other changes include horses being rested for one day after four consecutive days of racing and if a calf in tie down roping or a steer in steer wrestling shows obvious signs of injury, a contestant will be flagged out or will be given a no time.
The changes come after animal welfare groups criticized the Stampede’s rodeo event calling it “cruel.”
Six horses died at last year’s Stampede.
