City rec centre gets set for expansion

Cardel Place, in the city’s northeast has served over 7 million people since it opened in 2004 and now finds its existing facility at capacity during peak hours.
Spokesperson Tracey Martin tells 660News, they want to make sure Calgarians continue to have access to everything they need to live a healthy lifestyle.
Martin says the expansion will include aquatic facilities, gymnasium, fitness equipment, dryland training, multipurpose program spaces and indoor playing fields.
She says they want to make sure they provide access to programs and services that are relevant and valuable to the community because they want to be here for the next 20-50 years to service their needs.
She adds, North-Central Calgary is one of the fastest growing areas of the city and the population is expected to increase about 50 per cent over the next 10 years and children under 19-years-old make up one-third of that population.
Initial costs of the expansion are around 40-50 million dollars and will be raised through a combination of public and private sources.
The public are welcome to attend open houses on the expansion plans on Wednesday from 3 pm until 9 pm and then Saturday from 9 am until 2 pm.
