A new study finds a jump in hate crimes reported to police.
Statistics Canada found that in 2009 the offense increased by 42 per cent across the nation.
Sergeant Bill Dodd with the Calgary Police Service tells 660News the stats are troubling, but it is not a surprise the numbers are going up.
Dodd says the crime is being taken more seriously and being reported by the public more often.
CPS is combating the offense with a dedicated hate crime investigation capacity within the service; along with a program of education for its members and encouraging the public to report incidents to police.
The force also continues to touch base with all cultural communities to keep on top of any problems.
