As the iconic Canadian rock song by the Five Man Electrical Band says: “Signs, signs, everywhere are signs.”
The trouble is city bylaw officials warn that with signs sprouting up city streets like spring flowers, there are rules in place.
“Before you place the sign, make sure that you can,” says the Director of Animal and Bylaw Services Bill Bruce. “The information is readily available, but there are roads that are prohibited, restricted. If you’re looking at higher speed roads, check the list. You may not be able to put a sign there.”
A lot of the signs at this time of the year are temporary, featuring either ads for commercial ventures or yardwork.
“It’s a combination of garage sale season and people just trying to get out there and promote their businesses,” adds Bruce. “I think the most important thing is, it’s fine. The law does provide for that, but under very limited circumstances.”
So what should you be aware of before posting that sign?
“You can’t put it on centre islands, boulevards, medians, traffic islands,” Bruce tells 660News. “Two metres back from the edge of roads, 30 metres back from an intersection or crosswalk, no steel stakes, no guy wires, just the highlights.”
Bylaw violators could see their postings confiscated and face fines of up to $100 for each sign.
