Donations keep youth centre open

Kids in Mayland Heights will be able to keep returning to a youth centre in their community for another year, thanks to some generous donations.
The Cornerstone Youth Centre relies upon provincial grants plus donations to operate.
Herb White, who reopened the centre in 2004, tells The Calgary Sun he’s struggled to stay open for more than three or four years at a time because money’s been tight.
A $35,000 commitment from the Prosser Charitable Foundation has come to the rescue; along with $8,000 from community donors and another $5,000 from Block Parent to keep the doors open another year.
The facility provides supervised space, homework help, music jamming and snacks for kids during what White calls, “the critical hour,” when kids in Grades 5-9 are off school but their parents aren’t home yet.
