Metis Trail completion delayed

Those who used to rely on Barlow Trail in the Calgary’s north end, before it was closed for a new airport runway, will have to wait at least another month for the opening of Metis Trail.

The thoroughfare was supposed to be finished this month, connecting Stoney Trail to 36th Street N.E., and making it much easier to access the city’s northeast.

Instead, thanks to a rainy spring, the city’s Conrad Hild tells 660News the road is not expected to open until the second half of November.

‘It’s challenging because when it rains, it’s not just the day that it rains, or two days or whatever it is, but you have to allow a time for a dry out period so that you can get some of the heavy construction machinery on again,” says Hild.

Meantime, another project building out 96th Avenue to connect Stoney Trail to the Saddleridge, Taradale and Martindale areas is expected to be finished this month.

Hild says the wet spring has pushed back construction timelines all across the city this year.
