LRT driver pleads with pedestrians

In the wake of two serious incidents this week involving pedestrians and the LRT, a veteran C-Train driver involved in a fatality on the northeast line this past summer is speaking out.
Mauro D’Orazio was at the controls during the morning commute on August 30th when his train struck and killed a man at a controlled crosswalk on 36th St. N.E.
He wants people to know there’s not much drivers can do when pedestrians ignore the rules and do away with common sense.
D’Orazio says close calls happen all the time.
“You try not to count them, you just, you go day by day. Pretty much every time you’re coming down the avenue, somebody’s going to jaywalk in front of you. You come to expect it,” says D’Orazio.
He says the biggest fear among most drivers are those who cross behind their trains, with too many failing to check if there’s another one coming full speed the other way.
