Two inmate deaths on same day at Drumheller prison

Two inmates at the Drumheller Institution have died.

Guards found one man unresponsive just after 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and shortly after found another man in his cell also unresponsive.

Both were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Sgt. Patrick Webb said investigators have yet to officially determine how the men died.

“We are going to be investigating from this point on as a sudden death, we consider it suspicious until we’ve been told otherwise and we’ve got an autopsy scheduled for early next week for both of those victims,” he said.

35-year-old Derek Upton had been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder while 24-year-old Nicholas Whynott had been in jail on a number of drug offences, serving a six-year sentence.

Both men were in separate cells.
