Shorter waits for energy projects?

A quicker regulatory process for energy projects is coming down the pipe.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver wants changes approved this year, citing the lengthy hearing process underway for the Northern Gateway pipeline.

More than 4,000 people have signed up to speak for or against the project.

Oliver was in Calgary Wednesday, speaking at the Chamber of Commerce.

He says speeding up the process likely means introducing a bill for legislative change.     Oliver also wants to see regulatory timelines that are enforceable.

He also told the business audience he continues to push for a diversified customer base for Canadian oil and gas.
