Nanton grass fire nearly impossible to prevent

Fortis Alberta has wrapped up its investigation of a grass fire, sparked by a downed power line, that left three Nanton homes destroyed, live stock dead and hectares of land torched.
On January 4th, a powerful windstorm blew through the town bringing down power polls causing sparks and igniting the blaze.
Calling the 110 km/hr winds a rare occurrence, Jennifer MacGowen with Fortis Alberta tells 660News the investigation has found that there was no reasonable opportunity for Fortis to have avoided the unfortunate incident.
“We do always look at maintaining our equipment. We had our facilities in the area recently undergo a detailed line patrol and they were found to be in good condition,” says MacGowen.
She adds Fortis is working closely with the families who lost their homes, land and livestock and says the company is currently working with their insurance adjusters to determine what there next step may be.
