Say goodbye to front-drive garages

A new policy making its way through City Hall has home developers concerned.

The “Street Design Policy” would ban front-of-home garages in most neighbourhoods, and also force builders to install sidewalks on both sides of the street.

According to The Calgary Sun, the double-sidewalk cost is expected to be passed onto consumers at a price tag of about $3,000 per home.

The director of Calgary’s Urban Development Institute says this flies in the face of consumer demands, as over 70 per cent of people prefer front-drive garages.

The policy is currently at Calgary’s Planning Commission, and would still need to pass City Council.
