A Stoney Plain man was caught driving 182 kilometres per hour in a 100km/hr zone west of Edmonton.
As if that’s not bad enough, he was three times over the legal blood alcohol limit when RCMP pulled him over.
To put it in perspective, the legal maximum is .08, while he exceeded about 2.2.
The 26-year-old – who is now facing impaired driving charges – was driving on Highway 16A in the early evening of June 15th in an obvious state of impairment.
Constable Jim Lebedeff with the Calgary Police Service traffic detachment says, if you’re driving 82 kilometres over the posted limit you could likely keep the vehicle in a straight line, but that’s it.
“You can’t react at all, not at that speed, that’s just crazy. If something pops out in front of you or somebody cuts you off or you have to react, you can’t,” he says.
“If you throw alcohol in there, then your reaction time is a whole lot less.”
Lebedeff adds, CPS conduct weekly checkstops in hopes of getting the message out there and he’s a he’s a firm believer a life is saved every time a drunk driver is caught.
