U.S. woman paralyzed by E. coli

A four-year-old Calgary girl suffering from E. coli poisoning may have dodged the worst.
The girl’s aunt posted on Facebook Saturday that she’s on the mend and may go home soon without dialysis.
But for a dance instructor in Minnesota, eating a burger with E. coli had much more dire consequences five years ago.
The Calgary Sun reports Stephanie Smith is still suffering from cognitive problems and kidney failure, and is now wheelchair bound from exposure to E. coli in 2007.
It was a U.S. inspection that first warned CFIA officials about possible E. coli in XL Foods beef shipped across the border this year, but officials waited to issue public warnings.
Smith says she knows well any delay in warning the public about possible E. coli bacteria is unacceptable.
