Young grizzly bears killed by train in Banff

A train has killed two young grizzly bears in Banff National Park.
The yearlings were near the tracks with their mother, who was not injured by the train, just 10 kilometres west of town.
Human-wildlife conflict specialist in Banff, Steve Michel tells 660News, Parks Canada is working to protect the fragile bear population in the area.
“We’re engaged with CP Rail on a five year, $1-million research initiative and we’ve partnered with a number of academic institutions and external researchers that are conducting some of the research,” Michel said.
“They’re looking at a number of different aspects of root causes of grizzly bear mortality to bear behaviour along the railroad tracks.”
Parks staff say they didn’t find any food in the area that may have lured the bears.
Thirteen grizzlies have been killed by trains in the national park since 2000.
