Infant injured in dog attack

A five-month-old is in hospital, recovering after suffering minor injuries during a dog fight at an off-leash park in the northwest.

Police Duty Inspector Guy Baker says around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man was out walking his dog with his child in a carry sling.

Baker says a short time later, two teens and a pit bull showed up at the park on Bernard Drive.

“The two dogs began to fight, the father bent down to try and attempt to break up the dog fight,” he says. “The baby fell out of the sling and was immediately bitten by the pit bull.”

Baker says the baby was not seriously hurt, and was taken to the Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

The pit bull is now in protective custody, with Animal and Bylaw services heading up the investigation.
