Stampeders fall 35-13 to Roughriders in CFL West Final

The Calgary Stampeders fall 35-13 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL West Final at McMahon Stadium on Sunday.

The Riders go on to play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 101st Grey Cup in Regina next weekend who beat the Toronto Argonauts in the East Final 34-26.

The Riders and Stamps have already met nine times in the divisional round, dating back to 1948. The Stamps lead the all-time match-up 5-4 and this year, Calgary took two of three tilts.

The cold weather was certainly a factor in both game play and fan disappointment with temperatures reaching -11 degrees Celsius before factoring in wind-chill.

An estimated 33,000 people attended Sunday’s game.

Jean Lefebve, communications director for the Calgary Stampeders Football Club, tells 660News, despite it being an almost capacity game, the Western Final isn’t actually a huge financial boost to the club.

“The CFL runs the playoff game, actually so it is more of a league initiative at this stage. We get to host the game; obviously it’s a nice reward for our fans,” said Lefabve.

He said, for the club and the fans, hosting the Western Final is more about prestige than anything else.
