Part of Trans-Canada reopens, another remains closed

The Trans-Canada Highway is back open from Calgary to Strathmore, but still closed from Strathmore to Brooks.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly said that section remains blocked by snow and stuck vehicles.

“We’re working with a number of different partners to try and get the vehicles removed and the snow drifts clear,” he said, adding it’s difficult to say when it will re-open.

“It just depends on how quickly we can work at different sights with different vehicles and trucks,” Reilly said. “There is a transport truck that is flipped over, or at least unable to move and that’s causing some serious concerns around the Highway 21 area.”

Because of the blizzard, the Town of Strathmore played host to stranded travellers, with about 15 spending Monday night in the Civic Centre, because hotels were completely booked up.

Most are now back on their way with the reopening of the stretch between the town and Calgary, with less than 30 who want to head East still waiting for the go.

Strathmore’s Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Linda Olsen said they are staying positive.

“People are pretty good, they recognize that it’s a tough situation so people are pretty much sitting around talking and playing cards, playing games,” she said, adding the community has pulled together.

“We’ve had a lot of awesome businesses and daycares, etc., donating cots and blankets for us to use, the Golden Hills School Division also supplied us with some mats for people to sleep on,” she said.
