CN blames heavy rain for Burnaby train derailment

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Investigators have now determined what led to seven train cars jumping the track in Burnaby yesterday.
CN says recent heavy rains are being blamed for the incident that saw coal spilled into a nearby creek.
The CP Rail cars, which were being operated by CN Rail crews, had been on their way from the Kootenays to North Vancouver when they left the track, with three of them flipping onto their side.
Emily Hamer speaks for CN. “The cause of the derailment was heavy rainfall that led to a beaver dam washout.”
Hamer adds clean-up efforts are well underway and the track is being rebuilt.
Critics say we can expect more derailments if port expansion continues unchecked.
Tomorrow night, Burnaby council is going to consider another motion to oppose the expansion of coal exports.
